Master of Arts in Educational Technology Courses
Michigan State University

Spring 2014

Course Title: Professional Roles and Teaching Practices II

Instructor:  A. Halvorsen

Course Description: In this course we focused on working with families and community groups to insure students' needs are being met.  We studied many different disabilities and how they can affect a students learning.  My group and I presented about Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and how it affects older students in the classroom.  We found how important it is to be knowledgable about a student's disability so that we (teachers) can advocate for them.

Course Title: Reflection and Inquiry Teaching Practices II

Instructor:  M. Beitner-Miller

Course Description: TE 804 explored various teaching methods through the use of inquiry based lessons.  In this course we were able to explore many inquiry based lessons through the eyes of students.  For example, we were given materials to make a boat that would hold the most paper clips. The instructor gave us opportunities to be the students and learn through inquiry.  We also discussed theories and data on teaching methods and students mindsets.

Course Title: Teaching for Understanding with Technology

Instructor:  R. Houtman & E. Stone

Course Description: This course was by far my favorite course.  We were given the freedom to learn how to do anything we wanted, but we could only use help forums and YouTube videos.  I used these tools to create a rag quilt, which is something I've always wanted to do.  This course was all about networking and using those networks to create or learn something amazing! I loved having the freedom and choice to make something that mattered to me.  I learned that if I give my students more choice, I could get more authentic/quality pieces of work.

Course Title: Adapting Innovative Technologies to Education

Instructor:  M. White

Course Description: This course had us explore and think like 'makers'.  We were challenged to repurpose tools to use with a Makey Makey kit to create something new.  This course also made me think about redesigning our classroom so that it allowed collaboration and space to have students become makers. I created a classroom with round tables and lots of open space that would allow for making and collaboration.

Course Title: Applying Educational Technology to Issues of Practice

Instructor:  W. Marsland & A. Steinman

Course Description: CEP 812 helped me recognize problems within school settings and how I can use technology to solve these problems.  We discussed how technology can help us meet our school goals as well as individual goals. We also discussed wicked problems within schools and how these are the most important problems to solve yet they are very complex.  In a group we came up with solutions to our wicked problem: how the current education system and teaching methods do not support 21st century learners. In order to solve this problem we thought teachers should implement personalized learning and flexible classrooms combined with 21st century skills.  We learned that this problem is very complex and we have to have teachers willing to take risks and implement these types of teaching methods in order for this problem to be solved.

Course Title: Psychology of Learning in School and Other Settings

Instructor: D. Campbell & C. Roseth

Course Description: CEP 800 was a course about how children learn and construct knowledge.  We read about psychological learning theories and paired these theories with our current teaching practices.  This course also discussed student misconceptions and how it is important to clarify any misconceptions students may have because these misconceptions can last a lifetime.  I created a video that showcased people's misconceptions about how car engines work.

Course Title: Approaches to Educational Research

Instructor: B. Gleason & P. Morsink

Course Description: This was the first research based course I had ever taken.  I did a case study about push-in or pull-out remedial services for students.  Throughout this course I did ample research on remedial services for struggling students to create a research paper.  I left this course feeling very knowledgable about my study.  I learned through my study that sometimes current strategies might not be the best and therefore we have to seek alternative solutions.

Course Title: Technology and Leadership

Instructor: B. Gleason & A. Yadav

Course Description: The main focus of this course was how technology and leadership can co-exist together.  We discussed what leadership looks like and what it doesn't look like.  In this course we had to identify a 'thorny issue' in relation to technology integration.  I discussed how many schools have funding available to purchase technology, but they often forget about the teachers in helping them gain the knowledge necessary to integrate the technology in the classroom.  A big lesson from this course was that technology integration requires leadership.

Course Title: Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners

Instructor: S. Barros

Course Description: This course focused on the differences in literacy learners.  My instructor was an ELL student at one point in his life, so the course focused a lot on ELL students.  We had many discussions about what literacy learning looks like for ELL students. In this course we read about different methods we could use to differentiate our literacy lessons so that all learners could be accommodated.

Course Title: Capstone in Educational Technology

Instructor: B. Dillman, S. Greenhalgh, S. Keenan, & M. Koehler

Course Description: This is the final course in the Master of Arts in Educational Technology (MAET) program.  In this course I created an online portfolio that showcases my work throughout the MAET program. My portfolio shares many experiences I had throughout the MAET program and is something I can use in the future to show potiential employers. I am proud of my portfolio and the features it has to offer.
